This week's Life Group Questions

1. What thoughts and feelings stir in you when you think about the Holy Spirit? What experiences in your (faith) life have shaped your view of the Holy Spirit?

2. At ECB, we believe that the Holy Spirit works in the same way today as He did in the days of the apostles (including all of the spiritual gifts in Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, 1 Corinthians 12:28). Is this what you believe as well?

3. Read John 16:7-11. Already before we are saved by Jesus, the Holy Spirit is with us to prove us in the wrong about sin, righteousness and judgment. He does this with the intention to point us to Jesus (John 15:26).

  • How have you experienced the Holy Spirit doing His convicting work in you prior to your salvation?
  • Our role in getting our pre-Christian friends or relatives or colleagues saved is not to convict, but to give the Holy Spirit something to work with in their lives. In what ways are you doing this?

4. Read 1 Corinthians 6:19 and 2 Corinthians 3:18. When we have accepted Jesus as Saviour and Lord, the Holy Spirit lives IN us. His specialism is to transform us so that we will increasingly become like Jesus.

a. What are some specific areas in which the Holy Spirit is changing/has changed you since you came to faith in Jesus?
b. The Holy Spirit prompts change, but He needs your intentionality to accomplish that change. How has the Holy Spirit been prompting you recently about changes He wants to make and how have you responded to these promptings?

5. Read John 7:38-39 and Acts 1:8. Jesus doesn’t wants us to just have a steady faith, He also wants us to have a flowing faith that spills over to other people. The Holy Spirit gives us the power, a new spiritual dynamic, so that we will overflow and be witnesses for Jesus.

  • Share with each other about occasions or situations in which you experienced the power of the Holy Spirit in being a witness for Jesus.
  • How does your faith (over) flow to the people you do life with? What is the place that the Holy Spirit has in this?

6. Spend time in prayer with and for each other, zooming in on the things we talked about today. Below are some prayer pointers to get you started, but when the Spirit brings to mind more/other things, please follow His lead.

  • Ask for more of the Holy Spirit in your life (Luke 11:13). We need regular fill-ups!
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you about the changes He wants to make in you and commit yourself to doing your part in that transformational work.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the spiritual gifts He has for you and how He wants you to use these gifts at ECB.
  • Praise God for Who He is and what He is doing in your life and at ECB.
