History

How it all started...

The Evangelical Church of Bangkok (ECB), sponsored by the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) began Sunday worship services in the annex of the Alliance Guest Home off Silom Road in August of 1966. The current property on Soi 10 of Sukhumvit Road was purchased with a long term loan from the C&MA. The original church building including classrooms, carport, a paved parking lot, landscaping and parsonage were built and were dedicated in November of 1971. The church from the start was already financially supporting local Thai churches through its Christian and Missionary Alliance sponsorship. It also supported institutions such as Bangkok Bible College and the Christian Home of Education for the Blind at Khon Kaen.

ECB is an international, English-speaking church ministering to expatriates from many nations and Thai who live and work in this capital city of more than ten million people. Every week more than 1000 people, representing more than 40 nationalities and denominations, are represented in two services. While nearly 15% of the congregation are Thai, the overall Asian demographic is nearly 60%. Many meet Christ for the first time at ECB.

Expanding the vision...

Through the ministry of ECB, three other churches have been started. In 1977, a group of staff and students from the Asian Institute of Technology were attending the church. They were coming to ECB from a long distance. A fellowship was started at AIT which continues to grow and reach out to the many students and staff. This is a highly influential opportunity because the students and staff of AIT come from many different nations. They are training to be the leaders in their home countries. They will be the scientists, engineers, technical experts and church leaders of the future.

The Mahapawn Sukhumwit church started out of a Sunday School class and became the largest Thai C&MA church in Bangkok. They eventually held two services on Sunday afternoons using ECB facilities. This church (renamed Mahapawn Bangkok) has since purchased its own building and has moved onto that property.

Where we are headed...

Another international English speaking church grew up in a community north of the city and ministers to mainly expatriates. The Chaengwattana Community Church is healthy and alive!

ECB is a growing, exciting, vital congregation that is involved in the city and community. Our desire is to bring light into the darkness, make a difference in the city, the nation and the region by seeing lives transformed. The members are active in the community and missions throughout Southeast Asia and the world.
