This week's Life Group Questions

1. We are created for God’s glory (Isaiah 43:6b-7) and we have an inborn capacity to reflect who God is (Genesis 1:27).

  • What does this say about the goal God has for your life? Does this goal excite you?
  • What are some of the things you want to accomplish in your lifetime? How are these goals aligned with God’s goal for you?

2. Read 1 Corinthians 10:31 and Colossians 3:17. Our primary calling is to feel, think and act in a way that make God look as great as He really is in every area of our lives. Looking at your daily walk, in what ways do the people around you see the greatness of God in you?

3. Read Psalm 16:11. When we are satisfied in God, glorification of Him will be the outflow (think about the restaurant illustration in Sunday’s sermon). How have you experienced Psalm 16:11 to be true in your life? Do you recognize the connection between being satisfied in God and glorifying Him?

4. In today’s age of self, we are tempted to believe that life is all about us. When we give in to this lie, chasing after God’s goal will no longer be our priority, because we consider our (self-centered) interests of more importance than His interests.

a. In what ways are you tempted to believe that life is about you? How does this impact your focus on God’s goal?

b. The focus on self makes us lose sight of where to find true satisfaction. The more self-absorbed you are, the less dependent on God you will be, the less you will seek His presence and therefore the less joy and satisfaction you will have (remember Psalm 16:11?). Have you experienced this reality during times when your goal-orientation was on “self” instead of God? Share your experiences.

5. Read Luke 9:23 and John 12:24. Following Jesus means that we value Him more than we value human approval, honor, convenience and even our own lives. Jesus calls us to renounce ourselves as the center of our existence, to die to ourselves so that we can have a fulfilling and fruit-bearing life in which we accomplish God’s goal.

  • Spend 10-15 minutes in personal reflection and ask the Holy Spirit to make you aware of areas in your life that are all about you instead of about Jesus.
  • Are you willing to give up your own way and humbly submit yourself to Jesus’ will?
  • Break out in groups of 2-3 and share about what the Holy Spirit made you aware of and what you intend to do with it.
  • Come before the Lord and pray with and for each other about the things you just shared.
