This week's Life Group Questions

For reflection and LIFE Group facilitation:

1. REVIEW

In this study we learned that Jesus has the power to redefine our story. He turns family scandals, sexual corruption, poverty, shame, moral failure and broken marriages into a new beginning shaped by His grace and truth. Jesus now invites us to live assured that our future will be better because of Him. Let’s take a closer look at how this study connects with your life.

2. APPLICATION

A. Which one of the four stories highlighted in Matthew 1 do you identify with the most? Explain.

Tamar: Family Scandal.
Rahab: Sexual immorality.
Ruth: Poverty and shame.
Bathsheba: Moral failure and broken marriage.

B. Which distorted perspective do you struggle with the most? Explain

Believing that my past defines me (I am what I was).
Believing that my present defines me (I will be what I am).
Believing that my future is dim (I am hopeless).

3. GET DEEPER

A. All four stories unveil some areas that can hold you back as you pursue God’s life for you.

Which one of these areas tends to bring you down and affect your spiritual growth? Explain.

___ My birth story (like Tamar, there is a family scandal in my story).
___ My previous lifestyle (like Rahab, I had a past lifestyle I am not proud of).
___ My family line (like Ruth, I come from humble or questionable origins).
___ My moral failures (like Bathsheba, I often feel guilty for past failures or a broken marriage).
___ None of the above.

B. If you identified any area above that is bringing you down, let’s take a moment to bring it to God so you can realign your heart with God’s heart.  Read 1 Corinthians 2:9 out loud and follow the Group Prayer instructions below.

1 Corinthians 2:9
No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined
what God has prepared for those who love Him.

4. GROUP PRAYER

a. Thank God for loving you and redeeming your story.

b. Renounce out loud before God any distorted mindset identified above that is bringing you down.

c. Declare to God that you believe:
a. My past no longer defines me, because now Jesus defines me.
b. My present does not define me, because Jesus is still redeeming my story.
c. My future is no longer dim, because Jesus will lead me until He restores all things.

d. Thank God in advance for the way He will work in your life and lead you in the year ahead.
