This week's Life Group Questions

1. Discovering your identity centers around finding satisfying answers to two questions: “Who am I?” and “Why do I matter?” How do you answer these two questions about you?

2. Your identity (your sense of self and worth) is the foundation of your life, but when that foundation is not rooted in truth, it causes cracks in your soul (spiritual and emotional instability). There are three common lies that many of us have come to believe about our identity:

  • I matter, because of what I do (performance lie).
  • I matter, because people like me (people-pleasing lie).
  • I matter, because I am in control (the lie of control).

a) Which of these lies do you recognize in what you believe(d) about yourself?

b) How have these convictions impacted the way you have looked at yourself at different life stages (child, teenager, young adult, today)?

c) What downsides have you discovered about the lies you believe(d)?

3. Read 1 Peter 2:9-10. Peter identifies five fingerprints that each believer has received in Christ. These fingerprints define the true and unmistakable you:

  • You are intentionally chosen (chosen people). Ephesians 1:4
  • You are God’s trusted partner (royal priesthood). 2 Corinthians 5:18-20, 2 Corinthians 3:5-6
  • You are infinitely valuable (God’s possession). Isaiah 43:4
  • You are unconditionally loved (people of God). Hosea 2:23, 1 John 3:1
  • You are totally forgiven (received mercy). Colossians 2:13-14, Isaiah 43:25

a) Declare these truths about you out loud together, replacing “You are” by “I am.”

b) Which of these truths about you do you find hard to believe? Why do you think this is?

c) How have you recently been challenged to replace the truth about you with lies?

d) What spiritual disciplines do you have to remain grounded in the truth?

4. Close your time together in prayer as a group. Here are some prayer pointers:

  • Praise God for who we already are in Christ: a new creation!!! (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • Ask Jesus to impress the truth about the unmistakable you on the table of your heart (Proverbs 7:3).
  • Pray for those in your group who struggle with believing and owning one or more truths of who they are in Christ. Ask Jesus to remove any past and present obstacle that are in the way to find freedom in Him.
  • Ask the Lord for vigor and boldness to stand your ground against the enemy in his attempts to steal your identity in Christ.
