This week's Life Group Questions

1. Conversation starter: what was the key insight you gained from Sunday’s sermon?

2. The Holy Spirit is our Counselor who guides us in various ways:

• He helps us to know what we need to know (John 16:13)
• He inspires us to say what we need to say (Luke 12:11-12)
• He directs us to go where we need to go (Acts 8:29, Acts 16:6, Acts 20:22)

a) What have been your experiences with the guidance of the Holy Spirit in these areas?

b) What was your response to the guiding of the Holy Spirit at those times: Obedience? Apprehension? Dismissal? Other?

3. Most of what God wants us to know is covered in Scripture. The Holy Spirit inspired and superintended the process through which Scripture was written and He uses it as His mouthpiece to guide us.

a) In what ways has the Holy Spirit spoken to you through Scripture to give you guidance?

b) What Scripture verses or passages have been instrumental for you to get clarity and direction in times of uncertainty?

4. Read Joel 2:28 and 1 Corinthians 14:1. Next to Scripture, the Holy Spirit also guides us through direct revelations like dreams, visions, promptings and words of knowledge. These revelations are what the Bible calls prophesy.

a) In what ways has the Holy Spirit spoken to you through direct revelations (either directly to you or through other people) to give you guidance? What impact have these revelations had on you?

b) Read 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22.

• Paul instructs us not to treat prophecies with contempt. Where do you stand? Do you eagerly desire prophesy (1 Corinthians 14:1)?

• Paul also instructs us to test all prophecies. How do you test prophesies to make sure it is indeed the Holy Spirit speaking?

5. Close your time together in group prayer. Before doing so, share with each other the things for which you are currently in need of the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

• Give thanks to the Holy Spirit for being your Counselor and Guide.

• Confess the reservations or skepticism you (may) have regarding the Holy Spirit or the ways in which He works and ask Him to remove these hurdles.

• Ask the Holy Spirit to speak clarity and direction into the things you just shared with
each other.
